The World Food Program donated dry rations worth of 90 Mts to the Ministry of Disaster Management & Human Rights to be distributed for the displaced people by recent floods for Kalutara, Rathnapura, Galle, Matara & Gampaha.

Sri Lanka received Rs 750 million as aid as a result of the agreement of understanding signed by Hon. Mahinda Samarasingha, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy

An Agreement of Understanding was singed by the Hon. Minister Mahinda Samarasingha, with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy in the presence of the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Under this agreement the said organization agreed to furnish Rs 450 million for development projects based the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre as well as Rs. 300 million as technical aid.

Sri Lanka received Rs 750 million as aid as a result of the agreement of understanding signed by Hon. Mahinda Samarasingha, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy

Following a tour of Italy by Hon. Mahinda Samarasingha, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, An Agreement of Understanding was singed by the Hon. Minister with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy for the provision of Rs 750 million for development projects and technical aid.Flood controlling projects for areas including Batticoloa, Ampara, Anuradhapura, Pollonaruwa and Dambulla, where heavy floods occurred recently, will also receive a stake.

Also present were Sri Lankan Ambassador in Italy, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya and Peter Dias Amersinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights.

Gifted to Police


To commemorate the completion of two years of the Presidency of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa and in order to strengthen the emergency responsiveness of the nation, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe recently distributed communication equipment worth Rs 800,000 to all police stations located within the district of Kalutara.

The Senior Police office of Kalutara was also gifted two motorised boats. The handing over ceremony was held at the Kalutara District Secretariat premises with the participation of the Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe.



Stink in Panadura

Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe recently visited the city of Panadura to resolve the longstanding issue of a rubbish dump adjacent to the Panadura Train Station.

After consulting with the local community and relevant local municipal council members the ministers instructed the immediate removal of the dump and also indicated that the necessary funds for this would be made available by the ministry.


Relief for storeowners affected by fire in Matugama Market
A sudden short circuit caused a fire at the Matugama market, causing severe damage to the stores, as well as destroying others situated in the vicinity. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights visited the area to look into relief measures with the storeowners and Pradeshiya Sabha officers.

A part of the first step towards relief was the provision of relief material from the Disaster Management Centre in Kalutara.


Commonwealth delegation on maiden tour of Sri Lanka

A delegation comprising representatives from the Commonwealth made a maiden four-day visit to Sri Lanka recently. With the aim of developing bipartisan ties, Betty Williams headed the delegation, which also met with Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights.

Minister Samarasinghe calls for a review of "lessons learned" from the Tsunami warning of 12th September 2007

Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, today called for an immediate review of the Tsunami alert process that was put into operation last Wednesday (12 September), with a view to learning from the experience and refining procedures. He stated that the largely successful exercise could prove a platform for making future improvements to the early warning process making it more effective and efficient.

Displaced persons due to landslides in Nuwara Eliya compensated

Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, visited the regions of Walapane and Hanguranketha in the district of Nuwara Eliya to present compensation to the persons displaced by landslides.

With the emphasis on reducing disasters that occur in the adjacent areas, Rs 20 mn worth of compensation was handed over to the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

Rs 10 mn for reconstruction of Kelani riverbank

The Disaster Management and Human Rights Ministry donated Rs 10 mn for the proposed reconstruction of the Kelani riverbank, as part of the Gampaha District Disaster Management plan.

Immediate protection for areas adjacent to Kelani riverbank to be implemented

Due to the heavy rainfall in the areas adjacent to the Kelani riverbank, officers attached to the Gampaha Disaster Management Coordination unit have initiated immediate protective measures to prevent the destruction of the riverbank. They will also implement necessary reconstructive efforts for the purpose of preventing the loss of life and livelihood of the people who live in these areas. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights visited the areas on May 16, 2007 to assess the measures undertaken. The Ministry has decided to allocate a sum of Rs 100 lakhs for the reconstruction of the bank.


Volunteers for St John’s Ambulance service awarded medals for bravery

Volunteers who served during and in the aftermath of the tsunami were awarded medals for their bravery, when the St John Ambulance Service commemorated a 100 years of service. Pictured are Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights who was the Chief Guest at the event, presenting a volunteer with a medal in recognition of his service.


Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights led Sri Lanka delegation for 15th World Meteorology Congress

The 15th World Meteorology Congress, which is the highest policy – making organ of the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO) was held in Geneva recently. Sri Lanka was represented by a delegation led by Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights.


The Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights have initiated a series shown below for preventive measures as well as better preparedness for disasters at district level.

Address by Hon. Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights at the 15th World Meteorology Congress – May 7, 2007, Geneva

The World Meteorology Congress is the highest policy – making organ of the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO) and its 15th congress is scheduled to meet from May 7 – 25, 2007 in Geneva. Every four years provides an opportunity for high-level government officials of WMO members to address this constituent body on a wide range of meteorological and administrative issues, which needs to be discussed.

In view of the continued strengthening of the excellent and mutually beneficial relationships that exist between Sri Lanka and the WMO, the Hon. Minister was invited to address the opening session of the 15th congress meeting on May 7, 2007 in Geneva.

The Hon. Minister participated along with G H P Dharmaratne, Director General, Department of Meteorology at the congress meeting.

A Disaster Management Training Centre at Horawapatana

Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights opened a disaster management-training centre located in the Horawapatana electorate in the Anuradhapura district recently.
