Sri Lanka received Rs 750 million as aid as a result of the agreement of understanding signed by Hon. Mahinda Samarasingha, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy
An Agreement of Understanding was singed by the Hon. Minister Mahinda Samarasingha, with the Civil Defense Organization of Italy in the presence of the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Under this agreement the said organization agreed to furnish Rs 450 million for development projects based the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre as well as Rs. 300 million as technical aid.
This agreement will be very much beneficial to conduct special training programmes as well as technical aid programmes for the officials of the departments which are specially focusing on disaster management process such as; Disaster Management Centre, Department of Meteorology, National Building Research Organization, Department of Irrigation, Coastal Development Authority and the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.
Accordingly, the said aid of Rs. 450 million was granted to a response to the special request made by the Hon. Minister Mahinda Samarasingha, to originate some flood controlling projects for the areas including Batticoloa, Ampara, Anuradhapura, Pollonaruwa and Dambulla, where heavy floods occurred recently.
In addition to the Hon. Mahinda Samarasingha, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights also met the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema, Former Prime Minister and the Present Minister of Internal Affairs, Giuliano Amato and had a valuable discussion about the withdrawal of the ceasefire agreement and the current human rights situation of Sri Lanka.
