Presidential Commission of Inquiry Commences Investigations

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate and inquire into serious violations of human rights was appointed in November 2006.

The Presidential Warrant requires the commission to inquire into serious human rights violations including 15 incidents specified in the schedule of the warrant. The President also by communication dated January 31, 2007 invited the commission to consider inquiring into the assassination of TNA MP Nadaraja Raviraj.

The commission began its investigation 14th May 2007 immediate after inauguration of sessions with the participation of members of International Independent Group of Eminent Persons and their assistants; and distinguished invitees.

The commission began sittings by questioning the police officers involved in the conduct of criminal investigations into the killing of 17 aid workers of Action Contre La Faim (ACF) in Muttur.
